Keep Horry County Beautiful’s annual litter index reports that Conway, Socastee and Garden City are the three “most littered areas in unincorporated Horry County” on a scale of one to five, with five meaning most littered.
Within those three areas, Dick Pond Road from Socastee Blvd to highway 544 is the most littered area in the county, having, since 2013, been rated a “5” once, a “4” three times, and a “3” five times, according to the index.
Duford, Kethuptown, Green Sea, Aynor, Bucksport, Loris, Carolina Forest, Red Hill, Nixonville, Longs, Daisy, Little River and Wampee are also listed as areas in need of litter pick-ups.
Littering is a careless act that plagues every state in the U.S., Keep American Beautiful found, and South Carolina is no exception.
In fact, Horry County is home to at least three known anti-litter initiatives including Keep Horry County Beautiful, Keep Myrtle Beach Beautiful and Keep Conway Beautiful.
Keep Horry County Beautiful, established in 2011, has had more time to gather data on which areas of our county are the most inundated with litter than their partners in Conway and Myrtle Beach, which have only been around since last year.
The annual litter index Keep Horry County Beautiful puts out is “also called a community appearance index,” April O’Leary, vice chair of Keep Horry County Beautiful, said. “Basically what it is, is it’s a comprehensive assessment of an overall appearance of the community. So we look at litter, we look at illegal signage, illegal graffiti.”

This organization is also hosting a rain garden installation event which will teach attendees how to reduce the chances of flood damage to their properties while also beautifying their properties.
