Sumter Girl Scout earns Gold Award for project helping military families

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

A Girl Scout from Sumter was awarded the Gold Award for her project that assists in teaching people how to sew buddy bags to gift to military families.

Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands congratulates Ivey Edwards for earning the award because of her project, which involved creating a website that walks people through sewing buddy bags.

According to a news release, "The website walks the community through step-by-step instructions on what to include in their bags. Edwards partnered with local United Service Organizations to deliver more than 200 buddy bags for military families with young children."

There are several standards Edwards was able to meet that resulted in her receiving the Gold Award.

"Gold Award Girl Scouts don't just change the world for the better, they change it for good," according to the press release. "The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change. The Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable."

Edwards' work honors the mission of Girl Scouts and benefits Sumter.

"We're 2.5 million strong-more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adults who believe in the power of every girl to change the world. We're the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure and success," according to the release.
