South Carolina teacher and her two children found dead inside their home

A mother, her son and her daughter were found dead in their home on Centennial Circle in the Myrtle Beach area Wednesday, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

It is believed the three died yesterday of gunshot wounds at about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Willard said that Horry County police were called to perform a welfare check on 42-year-old Laura Moberley and her children, 11-year-old Eric Moberley and 8-year-old Emily Moberley. When police arrived at about 1:45 p.m., according to the department, they found the three deceased.

Horry County Schools released today that Laura was hired by Horry County Schools in 2018 as a Reading Loss Interventionist at Carolina Forest Elementary School. Emily was in 3rd grade at Carolina Forest Elementary School and Eric was in 7th grade at Ten Oaks Middle School.

“We are at a loss for words after learning of the tragic incident that affected an entire family with ties to Horry County Schools,” the district released. “We lift our strongest prayers for the Moberley family and for everyone who knew them. We encourage our community to keep our students and staff in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Our district has a team of counselors made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this. Our counselors are available at the affected schools for any student or employee who may need or want assistance surrounding this tragedy.”

HCPD posted on their Facebook page that the department is “saddened to acknowledge the death of two young children in a shooting incident yesterday in the Carolina Forest area.”

The Sun News asked HCPD why the department’s statement only gives condolences to the two children and not their mother.

Mikayla Moscov, public information officer for the department, said in response, “What we can say at this point is that the incident remains under investigation. The statement addresses community inquiries related to the specific/atypical loss of two children in our community, and also acknowledges a total of three deceased.”

The department also noted that Horry County Fire Rescue, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Child Fatality Unit, and Horry County Coroner’s Office are working together to investigate, notify next of kin and provide support to those in need.

The Sun News has requested the incident report from HCPD and has not yet received it.

“Our community is hurting today, and that is undeniable. We ask that you be kind to one another—you may not know who has been impacted by this tragedy,” the post read. “This investigation is ongoing, and at this time we do not believe there to be any threat to the community. Our thanks go out to our public safety partners who assisted at the scene, provided aid for our teams, and continue to serve this community.”
