A Conway coroner released today that the mother and two children discovered dead in their home in Carolina Forest on Aug. 31 was ruled a murder-suicide.
“Homicide for both Eric and Emily Moberley and suicide for Laura Moberley,” Tamara Willard, an Horry County coroner, said today.
The three are survived by William Moberley, their father and husband.
South Carolina court records show that the Moberley parents were in a custody battle which began on June 13, 2022.
Laura, Eric and Emily Moberley, who were found dead from gunshot wounds last Wednesday in their Horry County home, will all be remembered this Thursday at Carolina Forest Community Church.
Both the visitation and service are open to the public. The visitation will go from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the traditional service, or funeral, will go from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.. The church is located at 1381 Carolina Forest Boulevard.
The three deaths came as a shock to the community, particularly to Horry County’s school district. The district, the day after the shooting, released that Laura was hired by Horry County Schools in 2018 as a Reading Loss Interventionist at Carolina Forest Elementary School. Emily was in 3rd grade at Carolina Forest Elementary School and Eric was in 7th grade at Ten Oaks Middle School.
Director of Strategic Communications and Community Engagement for Horry County Schools Lisa Bourcier said that students and faculty who are struggling in light of this incidence should take advantage of resources provided at the schools.
“Our students and staff are doing as well as can be expected after the tragic loss of a teacher and her two children. Our district has a team of counselors made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this,” Bourcier said. “Our counselors are available at the affected schools for any student or employee who may need or want assistance surrounding this tragedy. We have had a few students and staff take advantage of these resources over the last few days, but our school counselors are always willing and able to assist students and staff as needed.”
