S.C. Governor's School offering new online STEM program

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Math has introduced an online, tuition-free diploma program called STEM Foundations, and Sumter students are being invited to apply.

"This is the first year for the STEM Foundations program, so at this point, we don't have any Sumter students yet in this program," STEM Foundations Program Manager Nicole Kroeger said in a news release.

According to the release, "STEM Foundations combines the excellence of a GSSM education with the convenience of learning from home. Created for rising juniors in the state of South Carolina, STEM Foundations is an online diploma program with a high-level STEM-focused curriculum. Utilizing a cohort model, courses meet synchronously and are taught online using Zoom. Students have online access to teachers' office hours, academic advising, academic tutoring, college counseling and guidance counseling. Students admitted to this program will begin their junior year in fall 2021 and graduate in spring 2023."

GSSM provides technical support and equipment to students accepted into the program.

Admitted students will be enrolled in five courses per semester with a seminar series. Juniors will take biology, chemistry, English, history and math. Seniors will take computer science, engineering, English, math and physics. For the lab sciences, GSSM will provide students with materials for safe labs to be done at home. Most STEM Foundations courses will be offered at the college level. Classes will meet for approximately an hour three to four times per week.

Applications are open through the summer with a priority deadline of July 15.

More information about the program, including a course catalog, FAQ and application, can be found at www.scgssm.org/stem-foundations-hs.
