New trend hits North Myrtle Beach: How to have your own shark, mermaid tail party

Mermaid Adventure Swim in North Myrtle Beach was founded by a mother-daughter duo from Indiana who seek to give local children the unique experience of being a mermaid, merman or shark. This is their fourth year in business.

“When she was little, we had a little pool in the backyard, and she would pretend to be a mermaid,” instructor and owner Lynn Stone said, referring to her 19-year-old daughter and now business partner, Makenna Stone.

“The dream is to have a retail storefront with its own pool where we can do this full-time,” Makenna said.

Mermaid Adventure Swim hosts sessions at multiple resorts around the North Myrtle Beach area and they will even come to your own pool for birthday parties and other kid-friendly celebrations within North Myrtle Beach year-round.

Lynn and Makenna have tons of tails and fins of all different colors and sizes and children can choose their favorite to use for the session.

“We have four main aspects of what we do. So of course, (Lynn) teaches the swim lessons and then mermaid-wise, we do the resort swims, or private swims if they want us to come up to their pool and then we also do beach photo shoots with the tails on the beach, and then we also do birthday parties,” Makenna said. “The resorts, those are set on a weekly basis, so we’ll go out to the resorts, we’ll have some preregistered kids and some walk-ups.”

The one-hour program starts with a photo shoot where Lynn and Makenna will help the kids get their mermaid tails or shark fins on. Then the children are adorned with props such as a crown and a lei. Parents are welcomed to take pictures of their little ones and Lynn will help the kids get into their most mermaid-like or shark-like poses. Next, the kids will be taught how to maneuver and swim in the water with their tails.

“Then we do different tricks like a fin splash where they flip their fin and it’s smashed in the water,” Lynn said. “Afterwards, we have our underwater obstacle course and a treasure hunt. Just different games and activities throughout the class.”

In only some sessions are the children given an opportunity to free swim in their fins.

“It is an actual program, so they don’t just get to free swim. There’s a whole program set with the games and activities and tricks and pictures, but with the birthday parties, it’s the same full 60 minute thing that we do at a resort but then they get, with the birthday party, an additional 30 minutes of free swim,” Lynn said.

The resorts that the Mermaid Adventure Swim crew regularly book include the Avista Resort, Prince Resort, Grande Shores Resort, SeaSide Resort, Myrtle Beach Travel Park, The Links Gold & Raquet Club, Camelot by the Sea, Carolinian Beach Resort, Anderson Ocean Club and Spa, Patricia Grand, Bay Watch Resort and Conference Center, and Ocean Park Resort.

Interested parents are encouraged to visit the resort most convenient for them. Mermaid Adventure Swim accepts preregistration on their website and walk-ups.
