Large-scale art progressing in downtown Sumter

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

Creative Canvas project will promote tourism in city, beautify the area

Progress is being made on the integration of murals into downtown Sumter that will beautify the community and those involved hope attract tourism.

The Historic Preservation Design Review Committee met Thursday to discuss two murals that are planned for 37 and 43 S. Main St. The addresses that were originally listed by the committee contained two that were incorrect. The correct addresses for the murals coming to downtown Sumter are as follows: 26, 30, 16 and 36 W. Liberty St.; 37, 43 and 34 S. Main St.; and 9 N. Main St.

Murals as large as what can fit on the previously painted South Main Street walls can cost as much as $40,000 or more, and not all artists for the murals have been finalized yet.

The artists are being paid with funding from Central Carolina Community Foundation and a private investment from Bank of Clarendon, which is sponsoring the Creative Canvas initiative, along with Main Street Society. No tax money is being allotted for the mural project.

Bank of Clarendon officials are excited about their investment into the aesthetic future of downtown Sumter.

"We are very proud to support downtown Sumter in a way that enriches and engages all members of our community," said the president of Bank of Clarendon, Barry Ham. "As a local community bank, we take great pride in our community service and in investing in our local communities. We know that both tourists and locals will enjoy these murals now and in the years ahead, and we are anxiously awaiting the unveiling of the mural in the upcoming weeks."

The bank's officials also see the murals having the potential to bring community members together.

"We could not be more pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the City of Sumter and to participate in the Creative Canvas project in downtown Sumter," said the chair of Bank of Clarendon Board of Directors Rose Buyck Newton. "One of our organization's core values is that of community service and giving back to the communities in which we live and work. We believe that art can connect a community in a very special and unique way, and what better way to come back together and to celebrate Sumter after this year of COVID-19 but with this exciting new project?"
